Lucid Hallucinations

It has begun. . .My trial prescription of mefloquine, more commonly known as Lariam. Lariam is used as a defense against protozoan parasites which invade the red blood cells and cause a fever known throughout the world as "Malaria". Where I will be at in Bangalore is an area which is considered an at risk zone for this febrile illness. The keyword in the opening sentence is "trial", yes this is a two week trial run of this preventative measure. The reason for this pilot study stems from the fact that Lariam often has disadvantageous effects on the user, in this case. . .Me. Located on the pill bottle itself is an offering of advice: "Call your Doctor immediately if you experience mood changes, such as new or worsening feelings of Sadness, Depression, Or Fear". I ingested my first pill yesterday, awaiting the possible side affects to come, which according to the CDC can include: headache, nausea, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, vivid dreams, and visual disturbances. A difficult restless night awaited me as I woke numerous times after having nightmarish dreams. Deleterious experiences from my past coupled with fictitious situations of the present came alive within my encephalon. Today I have been experiencing a quasi-dream state, and a feeling in my chest which resembles the sense one gets after imbibing one to many cups of coffee. There are alternatives however, and after discovering that I am susceptible to the side affects which Lariam provides I am now looking towards the other possibilities. In the mean time however, I have a weeks worth of Lariam in my system and will now be able to experience lucid hallucinations for an unknown number of nights.

Wow, I'd love to hear more about these 'dreams' Is there a big white elephant named rosie in them? In that case, I think you should do a handstand. Maybe the ferrets HAVE come home. And they live in a basketball. Only temporary though. Make sure to get a cowboy hat.

omigosh! good luck with the pills. i almost typed good lick. whew.. that was close. but seriously. from those who've experienced it i hear you get some pretty freak-i-licious dreams. So if you dream of flowers turning into daggers or a boiling pot that frightens you (yes... a canadian friend of mine had such a dream) then consult yuor doctor and take lunesta instead. cuz that probably deters mosquitos just as well. (this sentence has not been approved by the FDA.)
And also! Hi! I'm adding you to my quick links on my page... if i can figer out how... Andrew has to help me... Moosh khor says mreeow which in Spanish means good luck in indonesia. I told him you were going to india, but i think that was lost in translation.

I talked with your mom last night about trying doxycycline instead. Doesn't make you feel goofy, but can sometimes make your GI system act up a bit, and of course, you must be religious about avoiding prolonged exposure in direct sunlight. However, even the Indians try to minimize sun exposure so that should be manageable. When you land, get an umbrella (for rain and sun), some long-sleeved punjabis, and pajamas and you will be covered and cool. A wide-brimmed hat would be a good idea, too.

when I went to Costa Rica with a group of about 30 youth, everyone was taking malaria pills, either the white kind or the pink kind. i can't remember what color mine was but everyone that was taking that color pill including me had hallucinations. one time I woke up in the middle of the night and thought that my mosquito net and everyone else's mosquito nets and the whole room around us were giant marble statues of strange naked creatures, just looming above me. i had to blink a few times and wait a little while for it to go away. it was weird! not to mention all the vivid dreams i was having. i even made a drawing of them i'll have to show you sometime... btw, nice blog :)
